Monte was drafted into the armed forces during the Korean War. Shortly after graduating from Antelope Valley High (Lancaster, CA), he entered the United States Air Force on July 14, 1954 at the age of 19. He proudly served his country at Laughlin Air Force Base (Del Rio, TX) until he was honorably discharged on July 13, 1958. Laughlin was a Strategic Air Command based during the 1950s and two of the primary jets on base were the Lockheed T-33 and the Lockheed U-2. Monte achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and worked in data processing where he learned computer programming and specifically payroll accounting. Laughlin’s computer room with its large IBM main frame computer serviced payroll for many Air Force Bases in the south and southwest United States. A natural athlete, Monte excelled in tennis, softball and basketball. When reminiscing about his days in the Air Force, he used to say, “rank meant nothing on the tennis court.” The Air Force was a turning point in Monte’s life; a time of renewal and promise where lifelong friendships were created. Upon returning to civilian life, Monte moved back to California and landed his first computer job in Los Angeles with Security Pacific Title, located in the Tishman Building on Wilshire Blvd. He worked in data processing in the title industry for 41 years and retired in 2000. He was devoted to Mary, and their wonderful children and grandchildren. Monte passed from this life to join God in heaven on January 18, 2015.
